Sennheiser HD 505 Headphones For Audiophiles & Gamers

The new HD 505 open-backed over-ear headphones "puts serious listening within arm's reach of the emerging audiophile or gamer."

Sennheiser's new HD 505 blends analytical tuning, precise detail, and enduring comfort, bringing the essential Sennheiser experience to listening setups and gaming rigs, so says the brand.

The business end of the Sennheiser HD 505 is a custom 120-ohm transducer produced at the company's cutting-edge audiophile factory in Tullamore, Ireland. The electrodynamic driver is housed in a circumaural open earcup.

With a claimed frequency response of 12 Hz - 38.5 kHz and total harmonic distortion measurement of less than 0.2%, we are told to rest assured that our music will be reproduced with "surprisingly rich detail and integrity."

The HD 505 is said to deliver a politely balanced sound signature, with the punchy bass, effortless mids, and non-fatiguing treble the audiophile brand is lauded for.

Sennheiser says that the angled transducers replicate the triangular positioning of a set of nearfield loudspeakers. This should translate into an expansive soundstage, sitting you in the sweet spot for your favourite music, movies, and games.

The HD 505 is built upon the trusted HD 500 series chassis. It features a synthetic leather headband, velour earpads and metal mesh earcup covers, with every component designed to last while exuding an understated sophistication.

At just 237 grams, the HD 505 should prove comfortable to wear for extended listening sessions. It comes with a detachable 1.8m (6 foot) cable terminated with a 3.5mm (1/8-inch) plug and a 6.3mm adapter for connection to the broadest range of audio sources such as amplifiers, sound cards, audio interfaces, and A/V receivers.

Klaus Hanselmann, Sennheiser Audiophile Product Manager told StereoNET:

The HD 505 is for anyone ready to experience the audio awakening a great set of Sennheiser headphones is known for. There is something truly special in here that puts serious listening within arm's reach of the emerging audiophile or gamer.

Like virtually all 500 series headphones, a wide range of cables and earpads are available to swap in and out toolessly. This modular design lets the HD 505 adapt to your evolving setup over time should you later incorporate a balanced audio source or need to add an in-line microphone.

The HD 505 is available now with an MSRP of £230 / US$249.95 / €280 / AU$449.95 and comes in Copper Edition and Gold Edition variants. Stay tuned for a StereoNET review of the HD 505 very soon.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
