PMC Prodigy Impresses Everybody In The Place
PMC's prodigy1 and prodigy5 loudspeakers were unveiled at High End Munich 2023, offering a new entry-level to the PMC “bring the studio home” ethos.
PMC's new Prodigy series has been unveiled with the debut of the prodigy1 standmount and prodigy5 floorstander at the High End Show in Munich.
The prodigy1 and prodigy5 are two-way designs featuring a 27mm tweeter and 130mm long throw, natural fibre bass driver and are offered with optional grilles.
Both drive units are professionally proven, with the bass unit featuring in the PMC ci series, which we are assured has become the reference for Dolby Atmos music mixing worldwide. Meanwhile, the soft dome tweeter is a development from the PMC result6 studio monitors, giving the prodigy1 a genuine studio heritage, reinforcing PMC's 'from studio to home' philosophy.
Both models are pretty compact, with the floorstanding prodigy5 not taking up any more real estate than its prodigy1 stand-mounted sibling, although the extra cabinet volume does have low-frequency benefits.
Naturally, PMC's Advanced Transmission Line (ATL) bass loading is employed in constructing both prodigy models, ensuring deeper, tighter and more powerful bass than would otherwise be possible from a cabinet of this size. Additionally, through the absorption of unwanted frequencies, it creates a much clearer midrange.
Complementing the ATL is Laminair, an aerodynamically designed vent at the end of the transmission line that controls the air as it exits by dramatically reducing resistance.
Per PMC's strict quality control procedures, the drive units are measured and listened to before assembly. In addition, every completed speaker is measured and then listened to alongside the reference model before being signed off by its assembler before packing.
Jeff Willcocks, PMC CEO, told StereoNET:
With these new loudspeakers, we have taken our knowledge, learnt over the past 30-plus years, and distilled it down into a duo of speakers that make the PMC performance available to many more people. It is one of the most significant product launches we have made, arguably second only to the launch of the fenestria.
The prodigy series is available from July 2023 in a Silk Black finish, with optional black fabric grilles, priced at £1,250 for prodigy1 and £1,995 for prodigy5.
