Monitor Audio Lastest Gold Standard Introduces New Cone Tech
Monitor Audio Gold Series 6G, dubbed a "contemporary classic", features new driver technology.
Monitor Audio's six-model Gold Series 6G speaker range builds on over thirty years of Gold Series heritage and boasts new cone technology, drivers, and a completely new design.
Hexagonal Diaphragm Technology (HDT) is Monitor Audio's new metal cone tech. It draws on the lessons learned in creating the RDT III cones for the Hyphn and its flagship Platinum Series 3G. HDT adds a hexagonal pattern to the cone's Nomex honeycomb and aluminium sandwich and carbon fibre skins to disrupt symmetries in the cone breakup, according to the manufacturer, resulting in a cone that shifts the frequency up by 10% compared to that of the Silver Series 7G.
This new tech is used across the range and features in the new 3-inch mid-frequency driver, the 6-inch bass-mid unit, and 6- and 8-inch bass drivers.
Naturally, the company's C-CAM tech is also employed, strengthening the cone and making it less prone to fatigue.
Further innovations are presented via a new version of Monitor Audio's MPD III (Micro Pleated Diaphragm) transducer used in the Hyphn and Platinum Series. This, we're told, provides precise high frequencies with more consistency, clarity, and accuracy, while the crossovers have been optimised for in-room performance.
Monitor Audio also adds that the cabinets are more rigid than ever and, thanks to a top trim on the 100 and 500 models, the MPD III high-frequency transducer sits higher, which optimises cabinet edge diffraction, they say. MA claims this will deliver consistent and precise imaging across the frequency range.
Finally, a man-made ebony veneer finish has been added to satin white and gloss black choices. This option apparently offers the same lustre as the real thing but with a lesser carbon footprint.
The range-topping floorstander is the Gold 500 6G, while the more petite and slender Gold 300 6G is fitted with two smaller 6-inch bass drivers compared to the 500's 8-inch duo. Both are equipped with 3-inch midrange units. The Gold 100 6G is a three-way standmounter with a 3-inch mid and 8-inch woofer and is joined by the Gold 50 6G compact bookshelf model featuring a 6-inch mid/bass driver and offered with optional ST-2 Stands (£550/ €675). Meanwhile, the wall-mounted Gold On-Wall 6G offers surround options alongside the Gold C250 6G compact three-way centre-channel speaker.
The Gold Series 6G is available now at the following recommended retail prices:
- Gold 500 6G: £5,500/ €6,500 per pair

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.
Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.
The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.
We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
