Cambridge Audio Evo One Wireless Streaming Speaker

Unveiled at the Hong Kong AV Show, the Cambridge Audio Evo One features 14 tuned drivers and 700W amplification.

Cambridge Audio's Evo One one-box wireless speaker system promises unrivalled performance, connectivity, and versatility. It builds on the hi-res streaming smarts and musicality of the Evo 75 and Evo 150 streaming amplifiers.

The Evo One boasts an array of 14 drivers comprising 4 x 1-inch silk dome tweeters, 4 x 2.25-inch aluminium cone mid-range, and 6 x 2.75-inch long-throw woofers. These surround the Evo One in front-, side- and rear-firing configurations, which Cambridge Audio says "deliver a phenomenally wide sound dispersion and a truly expansive soundstage."

Power is delivered by 700W of Class D amplification—50W (RMS) per driver for fine control—while advanced Digital Signal Processing (DSP) has allowed for perfect tuning of "the Cambridge signature sound."

All of that Cambridge Audio goodness is wrapped in a minimalist retro-modern aesthetic, designed in London by Red Dot Award-winning designer Ged Martin. Here, you have beautifully figured real walnut veneer paired with a grille apparently inspired by natural honeycomb forms. We're told that this design is also good for not obstructing the sound. This structure is then covered with acoustically transparent fabric.

Up front, a 6.8-inch colour screen offers a clock display, album artwork and track information, or virtual VU meters.

Evo One is built around the fourth generation of StreamMagic and enables direct streaming from Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Deezer, Qobuz, Roon Ready, UPnP, and Internet Radio with support for up to 32-bit/192kHz hi-res audio over Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

Additionally, Evo One offers Bluetooth, AirPlay 2, and Google Cast options. It is fully compatible with Google Home, Apple AirPlay, and Roon multiroom systems, allowing users to share music across devices throughout the home.

Meanwhile, wired connectivity is equally well served. HDMI eARC means the Evo One can be connected to a TV, forming the sound foundations of your home entertainment system. A moving-magnet (MM) phono stage means a hi-fi turntable can be directly connected, while a line input takes care of other analogue sources. An optical digital input and USB-A media socket provide further digital options.

Finally, a seven-band EQ can be used to tweak the sonics manually alongside a wealth of presets. The app's Room-optimisation features enable you to manually adapt the sound to your unique living space.

Cambridge Audio Evo One is available at cambridgeaudio.com and approved retailers, priced at £1,299/ €1,499.

applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
