Denon DHT-S218 Budget Dolby Atmos Soundbar

Denon's new DHT-S218 soundbar promises affordability, convenience, and sound performance.

Denon's S218 soundbar could well find its way into many homes thanks to its keen pricing and range of features, including HDMI eARC for connecting to your TV alongside a HDMI passthrough connection that supports 4K and Dolby Vision HDR. I don't mean to put the cat amongst the pigeons here, but the much more expensive Sonos Beam and Applause Award-winning Arc don't include that in their spec list.

Other connectivity options are optical audio, analogue and a subwoofer output. You can also squirt your tunes to it wirelessly via Bluetooth with support for Bluetooth LE (low energy).

Under the hood, the new Denon soundbar sports six drivers in a 2.1 configuration, comprising a pair of 25mm tweeters, two 90x40mm racetrack midrange drivers, and two 75mm subwoofer units. However, none of these fire upwards, so Dolby Atmos will result from clever processing that gives the listener the impression of height effects.

While DTS: X support seems to be missing from the spec sheet, the DHT-S218 covers pretty much every Dolby Audio format. Furthermore, Denon Dialog Enhancer should mean you don't miss a word of onscreen chat.

Finally, good news if you don't like your living room looking like an AV store as this compact soundbar measures just 13 x 90 x 6.7cm (HxWxD) and only weighs 3.6kg, meaning it should fit comfortably on most media units if you don't want to take advantage of its keyhole wall mounts.
